Napoli vs Arsenal preview

Arsenal arrive in Italy at the start of what they hope will be a long journey to June’s Champions League finale at Atletico Madrid’s Estadio Metropolitano.

The Gunners are joint-second favourites at 11/2 with Betfair to go one better than last season’s heartbreaking penalty shootout defeat to PSG and lift the trophy for the first time in their history.

The early signs are positive, with Mikel Arteta’s side starting the Premier League season with maximum points, one goal conceded and a statement win over supposed challengers Chelsea on Sunday.

And there’s a reasonable expectation that their 100% start will continue based on their performances in Europe last season.

Arsenal went all 15 matches without losing a single tie inside 90 minutes, including the final. They claimed a maximum eight wins in the League Phase, conceding just four goals in those matches and keeping five clean sheets.

These sides haven’t met since 2019, but Arsenal can take confidence from winning both of their previous meetings to nil in the Europa League.

And history is also on the Gunners’ side when it comes to facing Italian opposition, with Napoli having lost their last three Champions League matches against English teams, while Arsenal have won seven of their last ten matches against Italian teams, including a 3-1 win against Inter Milan last year.

As for Napoli, they’ve not started the season particularly well, losing two of their three games, including a painful 3-2 loss to Inter over the weekend despite taking a two-goal lead.

Last season’s efforts weren’t particularly inspiring either, finishing 30th in last season’s league phase and winning just two of their eight matches.

Tip 1: Arsenal win to nil

Arsenal look like a well-oiled machine and should be capable of starting their Champions League journey with maximum points.

The Gunners were perfect in last season’s league phase, racking up eight victories and shipping only four goals. That defensive solidity is clearly still there in abundance, having allowed just six shots on target this season, with only one of those classified as a big chance.

Napoli are still finding their feet under Max Allegri and might have trouble picking themselves up following their 3-2 defeat at the San Siro. They’ve also failed to score in three of their last four meetings with Arsenal.

Mikel Arteta will make changes ahead of the weekend’s trip to Sunderland, but wholesale changes are extremely unlikely.

The Norwegian, 27, looks rejuvenated following a successful World Cup, in which he provided four assists in five appearances. He’s carried that form into the new season with three goals in four matches, including the Community Shield, while leading his side for expected assists with seven chances created and ranking second for shots at goal, averaging an effort every 36 minutes.
