Liverpool vs Atletico Madrid preview
Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola gets his first taste of Champions League football as Atletico Madrid make the trip to Merseyside in the first of eight league phase fixtures.
The Spanish manager, who replaced Arne Slot this summer, clinched his first win as Reds manager over the weekend courtesy of Alexander Isak’s brace to dispatch promoted Ipswich Town.
But while that victory will have been a huge relief following successive draws with Newcastle and Nottingham Forest, Iraola will want a first win at Anfield and a good start to their European campaign.
History and records suggest they will.
Liverpool have never lost their first European Cup or Champions League match of a campaign at home, winning ten of their 12 games.

The Reds also beat Atletico Madrid in the opening matchday of the league phase last season in a 3-2 thriller – although Andy Robertson and Mohamed Salah aren’t around for similar heroics this time.
Furthermore, Liverpool have a formidable record at Anfield in the UCL, winning 17 of their last 18 European group/league phase games. They’ve also won each of their last three Champions League meetings with the Spanish side.
However, there’s enough reason to think that a win over Ipswich isn’t necessarily a sign that Liverpool are back.
It was their first win and clean sheet in seven competitive matches, while they’ve also shipped two goals in the two games before that – and their expected goals conceded figure is marginally worse than Coventry City’s.
Then again, Atletico Madrid weren’t great on the road in this competition last season.
They lost four of their eight UCL away games last season, while they suffered more away-day woe last time out, losing 3-0 to Athletic Bilbao with zero big chances recorded.
