A Wicklow man accused of stealing cigarettes from a shop, before allegedly threatening staff at another premises with a broken glass bottle, has been remanded in custody.
Kevin Teehan (49), with an address at Killarney Road, Bray, appeared at a sitting of Bray District Court charged with one count of theft and possession of a blade or an item that was sharply pointed.
It is alleged he entered a post office located inside the Nearby shop on Kilbride Lane at 3pm on Thursday, August 20, and stole €41 worth of cigarettes.
Mr Teehan is accused of entering a second premises on Herbert Road, where he wielded a broken glass bottle and threatened staff.
No injuries were reported in either incident.
Sergeant Mick Dee informed the court that directions from the Director of Public Prosecutions are still outstanding.
It was noted that the defendant had legal representation, but his solicitor is taking part in the withdrawal of legal aid services.
The withdrawal of services follows a dispute between criminal defence solicitors and the Government over proposed legal aid reforms brought in on July 1 by Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan.
Mr Teehan previously applied for bail, but was refused by Judge Derek Cooney.
Judge Mary McAveety instructed Mr Teehan to speak to his solicitor and apply to the High Court for bail.
He was remanded in custody for four weeks, with the matter due to return at the end of September.
