Netflix announces production of third Inbetweeners film
Creators Damon Beesley and Iain Morris return as writers and directors, with the original cast reprising their roles
Netflix has announced that production has begun on a new Inbetweeners film, with the original cast members reprising their roles.
It will be a continuation of the popular Channel 4 sitcom, which aired on E4 from 2008 to 2010, followed by two films in 2011 and 2014.
The actors Simon Bird, James Buckley, Blake Harrison and Joe Thomas will star as Will McKenzie, Jay Cartwright, Neil Sutherland and Simon Cooper. The coming-of-age comedy followed the misadventures of the four teenage friends at the fictional Rudge Park comprehensive as they navigated school life, friendship and failed sexual encounters.
The trailer announcing the new film begins with a garage door being opened and pairs of feet making their way towards a car, revealed to be Simon’s yellow Fiat Cinquecento. The four men are then seen in the car, and when it fails to start Simon says: “Ah, for fuck’s sake.”
He gets the engine going and drives the car out of the garage with the number three written on the rear windscreen. The trailer ends with the announcement: “Now in production.”
The Inbetweeners creators, Damon Beesley and Iain Morris, will return to write and direct the film. They said: “It’s been super-fun hanging out with our friends again, and we’re going to work hard every week to ensure there are no problemos making this new film for humans.”
In the first film, which grossed £65.1m at the box office, the group of friends head to Crete in Greece for a post-sixth form break. It made history as the biggest opening weekend for a UK comedy at the time, according to Netflix.
The 2014 follow-up, which grossed £46.6m, reunited Will, Simon, and Neil as they travelled to Australia to visit Jay during his gap year.
It is not known whether Emily Atack will return in her role as Charlotte Hinchcliffe, or if Emily Head will come back as Carli D’Amato.
