BEFORE they were scooping up Oscars or becoming huge Hollywood heartthrobs some of the biggest names on the planet were lying in hospital beds or causing chaos in the Holby City Hospital A&E department.
As the BBC’s iconic medical drama Casualty celebrates an incredible 40 years on screen and prepares a bombshell move to a brand-new home in Wales – we look back at the show’s unbelievable legacy as an A-list launching pad.

In the anniversary two-part special which aired on Saturday, Kellie Shirley returned in her role as Sophie Peters, only to meet her demise after sustaining horrific injuries after a huge explosion that pushed the emergency team to its limits.
And here are some of the other household names who cut their teeth on the world’s longest running medical drama. From an Oscar queen and a Star Wars babe to Marvel hunks and Doctor Who himself.
1. Kate Winslet
Before being an Oscar-winning A-lister, Kate Winslet appeared on Casualty in 1993, playing Suzanne, a traumatised girl caught in a deeply troubled relationship within her boyfriend’s family.
While she only acted in one episode, it served as a stepping stone just before her mainstream breakthrough in 1997, where she starred as Rose in Titanic.

She went on to achieve critical acclaim for Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind in 2004, and The Reader in 2008, which won her an Academy Award in 2009.
Settling into a grounded, low-key life in West Sussex with her third husband, Edward Abel Smith, and their son Bear, Kate bagged a 2021 Primetime Emmy Award for Mare of Easttown and remains one of the most respected powerhouses in the industry.
2. Daisy Ridley
Daisy Ridley appeared on Casualty in 2013 for a single episode as Fran Bedingfield, a manipulative and mean-spirited “friend” of series regular Robyn Miller, who got caught in a dramatic fairground accident.
Just two years later, she achieved galactic success playing Rey in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, spanning 2015 to 2019.

However, the instant, intense global spotlight led her to step away from social media to escape online harassment.
While expanding her film credits to include Murder on the Orient Express in 2017, and Young Woman and the Sea in 2024, Daisy, worth an estimated £19million, also met her future husband, actor Tom Bateman, on the Orient Express set.
The notoriously private couple – who share a home in London – quietly married in 2023.
3. Orlando Bloom

Fans of Orlando Bloom may have first seen him in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, which was released between 2001–2003.
However, he joined Casualty beforehand with guest appearances in 1994 and 1996.
Over three episodes, he played Noel Harrison, who was a troubled, accident-prone labourer who engaged in self-harm and frequently ended up in the emergency department.
Soon after, he landed his iconic roles as Legolas and also Will Turner in Pirates of the Caribbean, and became a major Hollywood figure.
Most recently Orlando – who has one child each with exes Miranda Kerr and Katy Perry – has been promoting his new film Bucking Fastard at the Venice Film Festival alongside co-stars Kate Mara, Rooney Mara, and Domhnall Gleeson.
4. Tom Hiddleston

Tom Hiddleston featured in a single 2007 episode as Chris Vaughn, a cocky and reckless young man who causes a horrific emergency when he abseils down a block of flats and accidentally knocks a woman off her balcony.
His post-Casualty career skyrocketed when he was cast as Loki in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2009, a role that brought him global renown.
This was followed by him starring in The Night Manager in 2016, and stage productions like Betrayal in 2019.
Off-screen, Tom found himself at the centre of a massive tabloid frenzy during a highly publicised 2016 summer romance with Taylor Swift.
Since then, he has kept his personal life much more private, and currently lives in London with his fiancée, actress Zawe Ashton, and their child.
5. Minnie Driver

Minnie Driver guest-starred in 1991 for one episode as Zena, a panicked patient who arrives in the emergency room with a bleeding forehead, only for the medical team to discover that she is secretly living with HIV.
The actress moved on to major film roles in Circle of Friends and GoldenEye – both in 1995 – and delivered an Oscar-nominated performance in Good Will Hunting in 1997.
Over the years, Minnie generated curiosity when she gave birth to her son, Henry, in 2008, keeping his father’s identity a closely guarded secret from the public for years before eventually revealing him to be a writer from her TV show The Riches.
Now residing in Los Angeles and in a long-term relationship with filmmaker Addison O’Dea since 2019, she has continued to star in hit series like Speechless.
6. Martin Freeman

Martin Freeman made a single-episode appearance in 1998 as Ricky Beck, a petty, “jack-the-lad” robber who gets stabbed after finding himself caught up in dodgy criminal antics.
Following his time on the show, Martin achieved widespread fame playing Tim Canterbury in The Office between 2001 and 2003, while also meeting his long-term partner, actress Amanda Abbington, on a TV set in 2000.
The couple had two children, born in 2006 and 2008, and frequently co-starred together as John and Mary Watson in Sherlock, making headlines when they quietly separated in 2016 after 16 years together.
Between starring as Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit trilogy and joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Martin eventually settled back in London, where he now lives with French actress Rachel Benaissa.
7. Christopher Eccleston

He’s most known for being the Ninth Doctor in Doctor Who, but before then, Christopher Eccleston brought his acting skills to Casualty.
He appeared in a 1990 episode as Stephen, a sympathetic HIV-positive man who struggles to navigate both his diagnosis and the medical system amidst 1990s social prejudice.
After establishing himself as an acclaimed dramatic actor in Shallow Grave in 1994 and 28 Days Later in 2002, he made television history as the Ninth Doctor in the 2005 revival of Doctor Who – a role he abruptly left after just one series due to a breakdown in working relationships.
In his personal life, Eccleston was married to his wife Mischka from 2011 to 2015, and they share two children.
Following his role in Thor: The Dark World, he opened up in his candid 2019 autobiography, I Love the Bones of You, detailing his lifelong battle with clinical depression and anorexia.
8. Jonny Lee Miller

Jonny Lee Miller guest-starred in a 1992 Casualty episode as a ruthless school bully who torments one of his classmates during an outing.
He quickly transitioned into international movie fame as Sick Boy in the iconic 1996 film Trainspotting, the same year he married Hollywood star Angelina Jolie in a headline-grabbing ceremony where she famously wore trousers with his name written in her own blood.
Though they divorced in 1999, the pair remained close friends.
