AT LEAST three people have been killed and several more injured after a five-storey building collapsed, sparking an urgent rescue operation.
More than 50 people are feared to be trapped beneath the rubble of the hostel which crashed down in Delhi, India.
Rescuers raced to the tragedy at around 1:30pm and have so far pulled four people from the wreckage – three of whom are in serious conditon.
A dozen fire engines have also been dispatched as bystanders desperately try to clear the debris for rescue teams to come through.
The horror unfolded after one building collapsed and crashed into a neighbouring hostel housing male students, according to a witness.
Construction work was being carried out at the “Hotel Haze” hostel which acted as university accomodation for youths across India.
Rooms had been packed with students because there were no classes on a Sunday.
Chief Minister of Delhi Rekha Gupta said the building next to the hotel had been evacuated “as a precautionary measure”.
“Every possible effort is being made to safely rescue those trapped,” she added.
