The event is being organised by groups, West Cork for Palestine and Killarney for Palestine and is being aided by West End School of Arts Killarney
The Gleneagle in Killarney will host ‘The Gaza Monologues’ event on Thursday, September 24 at 7pm, an event that is described by organisers as “An immersive theatrical performance spotlighting voices from Gaza.”
Organised by the groups West Cork for Palestine and Killarney for Palestine – in collaboration with the West End School of Arts Killarney – all proceeds from the event will go towards supporting displaced families and the charity Children Not Numbers.
For many people, organisers said, the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza remains distant or abstract. This production aims to bridge that gap by giving voice to the people living through it.
The evening will feature a series of short, personal monologues written by residents of Gaza, interwoven with diverse musical compositions.
Local actors and musicians from Cork and Kerry will deliver these performances live on stage, translating the daily struggles, resilience, and hopes of Gazan citizens into an accessible experience for those who may not fully understand the situation unfolding there today.
The production’s origins, organisers said, lie in an act of defiance. In 2010, thirty-three young people from Gaza rejected the narrative that their only expression could be “cries of fear and moans of frustration.” They believed they possessed a voice capable of rising higher than the drones of war and the planes that bombarded them day and night.
Their collective declaration was clear: “Enough! We deserve a world better than this, a world without fear, siege or occupation.”
This spirit of resistance and hope is preserved in the current production, directed by Naser Al Swirki, a renowned Palestinian theatre and film director currently residing in Skibbereen. Al Swirki has toured extensively across Irish venues in recent years with this specific production.
His work is adapted from a concept originally developed and devised by the Ashtar Theatre in Ramallah, Palestine.
Following the performance, a panel discussion will offer further insight into the context of the monologues and the broader humanitarian landscape.
Audiences are encouraged to bring friends and family; children aged 12 years and older are very welcome to attend. Doors will open at 7pm ahead of the 7.30pm start time.
Tickets will cost €15. The show will last an hour.
