A 37-year-old man has been remanded on bail after appearing in court charged with having tens of thousands of images and videos of child abuse and producing and distributing such material over a six-year period.
Edward Sweeney, of Arundel Drive, Glasgow, Scotland, appeared before Judge Conor Fottrell at Dún Laoghaire District Court earlier this week.
He faces eight charges under the Child Trafficking and Pornography Act 1998.
Six of the charges allege possession of child pornography on various electronic devices seized at an address in Monkstown, Co Dublin.
It is alleged that on March 13, 2019, Mr Sweeney knowingly possessed an Apple MacBook Pro containing 7,343 images and 2,108 videos of child pornography.
Three of the possession charges relate to the same date and concern USB storage devices.
One is alleged to have contained 16,545 images and 690 videos, another 141 images and 548 videos, and a third 2,474 images and 2,076 videos.
Mr Sweeney is also accused of possessing child pornography on two devices at the Alma Road address on July 21, 2023.
One charge concerns a black OnePlus phone allegedly containing 23,217 images and 832 videos, while another relates to a grey Dell laptop allegedly containing 21 images and 30 videos.
He is separately charged with knowingly producing child pornography for the purpose of distribution, publication, exportation, sale or show between February 25, 2012, and October 29, 2018, in the Dublin area.
He is also charged with knowingly distributing child pornography during the same time period.
The production and distribution allegations are contrary to Section 5(1) of the Child Trafficking and Pornography Act 1998, while the possession charges are contrary to Section 6(1) of the Act.
Judge Fottrell remanded Mr Sweeney on continuing bail to appear again at Dún Laoghaire District Court on November 3.
