The Grand Tour is back on screens with a brand-new set of hosts – and there’s one star who has shone brightly.
It was never going to be an easy task taking over from the legendary industry trio Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May to helm Amazon Prime’s answer to Top Gear.
But three new hosts have, nonetheless, been handed the mantle as the new season launched with James Engelsman, Thomas Holland, and Francis Bourgeois at the steering wheel of the hit motoring series.
This is a very 21st-century takeover of the show, with James and Thomas first finding fame on YouTube while Francis is a train enthusiast who became an unexpected internet breakout star with over six million followers and counting.
Inevitably, standing on the shoulders of giants means that they have already had a mixed reception, with some believing they pale in comparison to the original trio while others think they’ve breathed new life into the format.
Of the three, Francis in particular has proven to be already amassing quite the Grand Tour fanbase with his infectious enthusiasm.
His love of all things locomotives and his unapologetic excitement about them is what cause his career to blow up in the first place and, now, it seems as though he’s bringing that same magic to the small screen.
‘I absolutely love it and I think it is because Francis’s reactions are real and natural and give off a contagious enthusiasm I don’t think we have seen for many years,’ Reddit user Reasonable-Olive-702 praised.
One user, RasiedByCakes, gave the unconventional compliment: ‘To me he’s like an unhinged Hammond but in a James May way,’ which many happily agreed with.
‘I think Francis takes the best of all 3 of the old hosts. Can speak like journo Jermery, can drive on the edge like Hammond and is just as smart as May. I reckon he is bang on the best out of the new 3,’ viper-attack16 echoed.
‘Those of us who’ve followed Francis for any length of time have absolutely seen his contagious enthusiasm before, he’s the one of the new hosts I’ve been most looking forward to,’ Grolbu shared.

The fresh-out-of-the-oven trio are all too aware of the mammoth task they have ahead of them, winning over a sceptical audience.
‘It’s a famously difficult show to take over. That’s probably the most diplomatic way to say it,’ James told Metro ahead of the show’s release.
He continued: ‘I think our version probably represents the best chance. It’s certainly the first one that has the blessing of the old guard on camera.
‘The responsibility is huge. It’s like, “This is ours to mess up,” and hopefully we’ve done right by them.’
