Bray’s Square One Theatre Group is preparing to celebrate an incredible milestone as it marks 50 years of community theatre with a special anniversary showcase at the Mermaid Arts Centre, on Saturday, September 12.
Produced by Noelle Clarke, the one-night-only event will take audiences on a theatrical journey through five decades of performances, featuring memorable characters, scenes and sketches from the group’s extensive back catalogue.
The showcase will also offer a first look at the group’s forthcoming production of The Great Gatsby, which is set to take to the stage later in the autumn.
Founded in 1976 when a handful of players met one evening in the former home of Oscar Wilde, the Strand Hotel, the group’s very first production was The Far Off Hills, which was staged in Epworth Hall, on Florence Road.
Through the years, rehearsal and performance locations have included Colaiste Raithin, before the group found their true home at Mermaid when it opened in 2002.
Since then, the group has established itself as a leading light of the arts scene in Bray and across County Wicklow, bringing together generations of actors, directors, backstage crew members and volunteers who have shared a passion for theatre.
Over the past 50 years, the amateur dramatic society has earned a reputation for delivering high-quality productions while also giving local talent a well-needed opportunity to tread the boards.
Thousands of audience members have enjoyed the group’s work, which has ranged from classic dramas and Shakespearean favourites to cracking comedies and family favourites.
The anniversary showcase has promised to revisit some of the best moments from the group’s most celebrated productions, including excerpts from The Far Off Hills, Macbeth, The Importance of Being Earnest, The Cripple of Inishmaan, The Odd Couple, The Death of Humpty Dumpty and Jane Eyre.
Producer Noelle Clarke said the evening has been designed to reflect both the group’s rich history while looking forward to the future.
“We plan to take the audience on a journey through our history. It’s going to be lively, funny, theatrical and full of the energy that makes community theatre so special,” she said.
Chairperson Maeve Miller described the anniversary as a significant achievement for everyone involved with the group down through the years.
“Fifty years is a huge milestone for any community group, and we’re incredibly proud of everything Square One has achieved since 1976,” she said.
“So many people have given their time, talent and passion to make this group what it is, on stage, backstage and everywhere in between.”
Earlier this year, the group’s contribution to Bray’s cultural life was recognised when Bray Municipal District hosted a civic reception in its honour.
The event celebrated Square One’s commitment to the arts and its role in fostering participation and community spirit over the 50 years.
Councillor Erika Doyle paid tribute to the members past and present, when she acknowledged the organisation’s impact on the community.
“Square One Theatre Group has been at the heart of Bray’s cultural scene for 50 years. Their dedication, creativity and volunteer spirit have brought enjoyment to generations of audiences and provided a valuable platform for local performers. It is a privilege to recognise their remarkable contribution to community life in Bray,” she said.
