Gardaí in Gorey, Co Wexford have renewed calls for the responsible use of e-scooters following the seizure of a scooter from a 12-year-old who was caught speeding.
The e-scooter was seized in Gorey on Saturday, August 29, after gardaí observed a 12-year-old boy driving the device above the 20 kmh maximum speed set for the device.
After stopping the young boy, gardaí discovered that the device was capable of travelling at high speeds of up to 70 kmh.
A representative from An Garda Síochana emphasised the associated safety risks of young people under the legally required age for the use of the device, as well as the dangers of speeding. An e-scooter is strictly for use by individuals over the age of 16 years old.
“Gardaí are reminding parents and young people to be aware of the significant safety risks associated with high-powered e-scooters and other personal transporters,” they said.
The e-scooter was subsequently seized from the 12-year-old boy under Section 109A of the Road Traffic Act. An application will be made to the court regarding the e-scooters return.
E- scooters are legal on Irish public roads for users aged 16 plus and while they do not require tax, insurance, or a licence, they must not exceed 20 kmh, have a max power of 400W. They are also banned from footpaths.
