Sir, – A number of British newspapers have reported that some private schools in Ireland are actively marketing themselves to British parents seeking to avoid the UK’s recently introduced VAT on school fees.
Indeed, one private school in Dublin states on its website that “Ireland’s subsidised education system allows us to offer a world-class education and premium facilities at less than half the cost of UK independent boarding schools”.
It is at best difficult to understand why Irish taxpayers should be providing a publicly funded element of the secondary education of affluent British families. At worst it is a scandalous use of public money. – Yours, etc.,
