Meath locals across Kells and surrounding areas are being encouraged to have their say on the future of the Commons of Lloyd, with Meath County Council currently inviting submissions on the draft Recreation and Amenity Plan for the site.
The plan, prepared by Meath County Council, sets out a blueprint for the future use of the site, with the aim of protecting its heritage and environmental qualities while creating an attractive, accessible and sustainable space for everyone to enjoy.
Kells Fine Gael Cllr and Cathaoirleach of Meath County Council, Cllr Sarah Reilly, encouraged Kells locals to voice their opinions.
“Lloyd is such a unique asset on our doorstep and this plan gives us a real opportunity to think ambitiously about what we want it to become in the years ahead,” the Cathaoirleach told the Irish Independent in a statement.
“I would strongly encourage people to take the time to look at the plan and make a submission. This is an opportunity for the people of Kells to help shape what facilities and amenities they would like to see at Lloyd,” Cllr Reilly encouraged.
“There are some really exciting proposals , including enhanced play and recreation facilities, a community centre, an event space, a bike activity trail, basketball and informal kick-about areas, improved walking and cycling connections with Kells, picnic areas and new biodiversity and nature areas,” she said.
“The feedback from earlier engagement with the local community shows that people want Lloyd to work for all ages, from young children and teenagers to families, older people, walkers and visitors to Kells,” the Cathaoirleach explained.
Cllr Reilly also noted her belief that the public and the Council must be ambitious in the vision for the Commons of Lloyd.
“I have also asked that consideration be given to providing an enclosed area where dog owners can safely let their dogs off the lead. I know this would be welcomed by many local dog owners and would provide another valuable facility within this fantastic open space,” Cllr Reilly said.
“The plan also proposes a new main entrance closer to Kells town centre, improving access for pedestrians and cyclists, as well as improvements to walking routes to make them more accessible for wheelchairs and buggies.”
“Lloyd has enormous potential. We have an opportunity to protect its history and natural environment while creating somewhere people will genuinely want to spend time — whether that is bringing the children to play, meeting friends, enjoying a coffee, taking part in an event, walking the dog or simply enjoying the landscape,” the Kells Cllr continued.
“I would encourage everyone to have a look at the plan and share their views. This is an exciting opportunity for the community to speak up and help shape the future of this important amenity for Kells,” Cllr Reilly finished.
The Commons of Lloyd Recreation and Amenity Plan is currently open for public consultation, with submissions closing on 10 September 2026.
