Let’s all hop back in a time machine and travel back to 2023, because the Colorado Buffaloes are, apparently, good again.
At least for this week.
Deion Sanders and the Buffs stunned Georgia Tech in Thursday night’s opener, 14-13, thanks to a late touchdown and blocked field goal in the waning seconds.
The game marked Sanders’ first time back in Atlanta as an FBS head coach, and helped the Buffaloes avenge last year’s season-opening loss to Georgia Tech in Colorado.
Of course, it also marked the return of cocky Deion Sanders, which we haven’t seen in quite some time. Makes sense, given Colorado has been pretty awful since Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter left for the NFL.
The Buffs went 3-9 last season, including 1-8 in the Big 12, and have completely fallen out of the national spotlight. Remember a few years ago when CU was on ESPN every single week?
Yeah, things have changed …
That being said, following last night’s stunner, Sanders made sure to let the haters know he was allllllll the way back:
Lordy.
“We rushed for 183 (yards), my God. They rushed for 51. I thought we were small?”
“I’m back.”
“I think this is the first sellout they had in how long?… I think we had a little something to do with that.”
Yeah, I’d say Deion Sanders is fired up today. Haters can hate all they want, but they don’t have a leg to stand on today. Colorado went into Georgia Tech — playing in its first sellout home-opener in 20 years — and ripped their hearts out.
All of that came AFTER a tough summer in which the team was ruthlessly mocked for appearing “small” in now-viral pictures from camp.
COLORADO LOOKS LIKE A POP WARNER TEAM
Nobody gave the Buffaloes much of chance — which was fair given how bad they were last season — but they were the better team all night.
Quarterback Julian Lewis finally put it all together on the final drive, throwing an absolute dart with 37 seconds left to give Colorado the lead:
Amazing. This kid couldn’t complete a pass to save his life for 3.5 quarters, and then he put together a masterful final drive.
It’s what makes college football the best.
The Yellowjackets quickly move down field on their final drive, but Colorado blocked the field goal as time expired to complete the upset.
And, of course, give Coach Prime all the ammunition he needed for the rest of the season.
