Man, 25, who died after jumping in canal during police chase at Notting Hill Carnival is named – as new details revealed

A MAN who died after jumping in a canal during a police chase at Notting Hill Carnival has been named.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has revealed further details following the death of Karnell Kelly, 25, on Monday afternoon.

Officers attempted to stop Karnell at 3.19pm as he approached the carnival area in West London.

He fled on foot and entered the canal near Meanwhile Gardens, according to the Metropolitan Police.

Officers and members of the public frantically sprung into action and managed to pull him from the water before CPR was carried out.

Karnell was urgently rushed to hospital but, despite the best efforts of medical crews, was sadly pronounced dead just before 4.45pm.

Amanda Rowe, IOPC director of engagement, said the watchdog needed to work out he “exact circumstances” of his death.

She added: “Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of Karnell Kelly and everyone affected by his death.

“We need to independently establish the exact circumstances of this incident given that he has died following an interaction with police officers.

“We are therefore appealing for anyone who may have witnessed and/or videoed any part of the incident to make contact with our investigators.”
