Naughty Dog’s Neil Druckmann promises more Last Of Us projects even after the TV show wraps up, which means Part 3 may happen after all.

Whatever your feelings about The Last Of Us, it’s undeniably one of Sony’s most important first party franchise, and yet technically it only consists of two games.

It has maintained relevance thanks to modern re-releases of both games and the TV show, but series creator Neil Druckmann has regularly flip-flopped on his interest in making a third game.

Recently, though, Druckmann has reignited the possibility of not just one but multiple Last Of Us games while sharing an update on his involvement with the TV show’s third season.

In an interview with The Washington Post, Druckmann mentions that neither he nor developer Naughty Dog have any real involvement with the production of season three of the show, which is expected to finish adapting the plot of The Last Of Us Part 2.

However, Druckmann stresses that Naughty Dog ‘is still the steward of this IP and even though this might be the end of this adaptation, we’re not done with The Last Of Us.

‘There’s a couple projects in the works that, when the time is right, I’m very excited to talk about.’

The immediate assumption is that Druckmann is referring to new games, be it another sequel or a spin-off of some kind, such as the cancelled live service title.

He has previously said he has an outline for a third game’s story and earlier this year, one former Naughty Dog employee shared new details about The Last Of Us’ setting that have yet to be explored, which could serve as a foundation for a new game.

On the fact of it there doesn’t really anywhere to go with the story, after the end of Part 3, but then we said the same thing about the first game and the sequel wound up being great anyway.

Although it’s worth noting that Druckmann pointedly describes what Naughty Dog is working on as ‘projects,’ so he could be referring to new adaptations of the series, like an animated show or something along those lines.

If there is a new Last Of Us game being planned, it would likely not see the light of day for five years or more. It’s already been six years since Naughty Dog released an original game and Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet still lacks a release date, meaning it could end up as a cross gen release for the PlayStation 6.

Druckmann did give away that Naughty Dog has a second game in development alongside Intergalactic, but since he’s only a producer on that one, it’s very unlikely to be something Last Of Us related.

There are rumours and theories that this mystery project could be something Uncharted related or a wholly original fantasy game, but so far there’s no real evidence either way.
