The following article contains spoilers from the episode of Emmerdale dated September 4. It hasn’t aired on ITV1 yet, but can be viewed on ITVX and YouTube.
Charity Dingle (Emma Atkins) has destroyed Sarah Sugden’s (Katie Hill) world in Emmerdale by revealing that baby Leyla isn’t actually her child.
In case you need reminding (seriously, where have you been), last year, Charity slept with Ross Barton (Michael Parr) after having a massive row with Mackenzie Boyd (Lawrence Robb).
This resulted in her becoming pregnant. In order to keep her one-night stand a secret, Charity chose to lie to everyone and state that the surrogacy journey she was on on behalf of Sarah had been successful.
The baby secret was kept for the entire pregnancy. Shortly after Charity gave birth and handed her daughter over to Sarah and Jacob Sugden (Joe-Warren Plant), Dr Caitlin Todd (Caroline Harker) discovered that the tot wasn’t actually Sarah and Jacob’s child.
The evil surgeon blackmailed Charity for months. Dr Todd’s storyline ended a couple of weeks ago, when she smacked her head and died after being pushed by Sarah.

When DS Thea Ramsden (Chelsea Edge) arrived to investigate Caitlin’s death, Charity immediately told her that she was responsible.
In today’s episode, the copper was back in the village. She took Charity back to the station for more questioning after explaining that she had found some issues with her statement.
Ramsden’s team had worked out that the scratches on Charity’s arm came from Doctor Todd’s non-dominant hand. In the immediate aftermath of the death, Serena Sugden (Casey Al-Shaqsy) used Todd’s dead hand to scratch Charity arm to fabricate physical evidence of a self-defence struggle.
Back in the village, Sarah was in an absolute panic over what might happen next with her gran.
When Charity got home, a broken Sarah concluded that the only way to fix the situation would be to hand herself into the police. She left the house and made her way to the car, with Mack and Charity racing after her.
Charity argued that she deserves to go to prison because of the bad things she’s done. Sarah was confused, and pointed out that Charity gave her the one thing she most wanted in this world – a child.
Recognising that she had reached the end of the line, Charity blurted out to Sarah that baby Leyla isn’t her daughter.
Goodness me.
What on earth is going to happen next?!
