Gone are the days of going to your local beauty salon for a blast of LED to perk up your skin. You can now do this from the comfort of your couch, with at-home beauty devices targeting everything from your face and neck to under eyes, scalp and more.

Dream it, believe it, and chances are there’s an at-home beauty device promising to help you achieve it. But, as the technology has become more sophisticated, so have we. We want devices that are user-friendly and fit seamlessly into our lives. If they’re clunky, uncomfortable, or require us to sit still for half an hour or longer every night, chances are they’ll end up in a drawer.

And the market is responding. The latest launches promise smarter hairstyling, at-home teeth whitening, de-puffing, hydration, skin rejuvenation, scalp treatments and, increasingly, several benefits from a single device.

Here are some of the latest and most innovative devices that have caught my attention.

Shark DePuffi Contrast Therapy Sculpting Tool

A common focus in beauty tech is treating puffiness and irritated skin, but the devices in question generally need to be used consistently before you see results. Shark claims to offer more immediate results with the DePuffi Contrast Therapy Sculpting Tool (€199.99 from Boots) via hot and cold therapy, with three heat levels and three cooling levels designed to target puffiness while soothing the skin.

The Shark brand hit the market with a bang in 2021, but not every Shark innovation has felt new. This is one of the exceptions.

Celluma Mystique LED Mask

Much discussed since launch, the Celluma Mystique LED Mask (about €1,400 from cellumauk.co.uk) is a good example of the evolution of LED. One device can simultaneously treat two areas – the face and scalp – with modes targeting the signs of ageing, acne and hair loss, as well as combination treatments.

Yes, it’s eye-wateringly expensive, but it also comes with unusually strong professional-grade credentials for an at-home LED device. It’s cordless and hands-free, and responds to consumers’ increasing demand for devices that can multitask, and allow us to multitask while wearing them too.

ghd Sculpt Interactive Hair Straightener

A long-standing brand that’s still innovating at a feverish pace, ghd’s latest offering is the Sculpt Interactive Hair Straightener (€419 from Arnotts). It uses AI along with different measurement systems to assess you when you’re styling. And yes, I do mean assess you.

This hair straightener can tell how much hair you’ve put between the plates, how quickly you’re moving it and even the angle you’re holding it at; then it adjusts the heat in real time.

Philips ReAura LED 3-in-1

Phillips’ first entry into the LED category takes versatility to a new level. I’ve written before about the many different LED devices I’ve used in recent years, including face, neck and scalp devices, but Philips ReAura LED 3-in-1 (€399.99 from Philips), which features red, rear infrared and blue light, along with different modes, essentially offers several in one.

Rather than needing separate face, eye and neck devices, the ReAura physically separates into individual sections: use the whole thing on your face, use the upper section around the eyes, use the lower section on your neck and so on. The message here is that you don’t have to choose one device to treat one area, choose one that treats them all.

Sensse Aura Pro Laser Hair Device

Scalp tech gets serious with the Sensse Aura Pro Laser Hair Device (€199.99 from Currys). An impressive combination of red and blue LED, electromagnetic stimulation, vibration and laser diodes, alongside a small reservoir that dispenses a scalp serum or oil of your choice through the massage pins while you’re using it. Yes, you read that right. We’re approaching everything but the kitchen sink territory here.

Foreo Issa Teeth Whitening Set

Beauty tech meets oral care in a collaboration that was inevitably on the cards considering our increasing demand for high-performance electric toothbrushes, teeth whitening products and more. The Foreo Issa Teeth Whitening Set (€99.99 from foreo.com) combines blue and red LED light with a peroxide-free whitening gel. The blue LED works with the gel to whiten teeth, while the red LED aims to support gum health, according to the brand. The device’s patented pulsing technology disperses the whitening agent evenly across the teeth, meaning all teeth get the treatment, rather than just the front ones as with many whitening treatments.
