A section of the M25 is closed anti-clockwise after a serious crash, sparking a warning from police for drivers heading to Heathrow and Gatwick airports.
The anti-clockwise lanes are closed between J11 near Ottershaw and J10 near Cobham following the crash around 11.55pm on Monday.
National Highways said: “The incident scene is now being cleared but this is likely to take several hours and the closure will remain through the morning peak travel period.
“Therefore, please expect long delays on approach to to J11 and also on local routes in the area this morning.”
Surrey Police said: “If travelling to Heathrow and Gatwick airport, please check your travel time before you depart as your journey is likely to be impacted.
“The road will be closed for a number of hours to allow a thorough investigation to take place. We will provide an update once the motorway reopens.”

Congestion appears to have cleared
Congestion on the M25 following a crash that happened late last night appears to have cleared.
AA traffic news is reporting delays of two minutes on the M25 anticlockwise between J12 M3 J2 and J11 A320 St Peters Way (Chertsey).
Delays of three minutes are being reported on the M25 anticlockwise between J11 A320 St Peters Way (Chertsey) and M25 (Cobham Services).
Traffic remains heavy on the M25
There are severe delays of 35 minutes on the M25 between J13 A30 (Staines) and J11 A320 St Peters Way (Chertsey).
Delays are easing, but they remain.
The average speed is 5mph, according to AA traffic news.
Delays of six minutes remain on the M25 anticlockwise between J11 A320 St Peters Way (Chertsey) and J10 A3 (Wisley Interchange).

A spokesperson for the AA said: “The M25 anticlockwise closed, severe delays due to accident investigation work from J11 A320 St Peters Way (Chertsey) to J10 A3 (Wisley Interchange).
“Congestion to J13 (Staines), two miles southbound on the M3, three miles northbound.
“Long delays via Chertsey, Weybridge, Addlestone and Byfleet, and nine miles of onlookers back past J9 (Leatherhead).”
Severe delays continue after morning rush hour
Severe delays are being reported via Chertsey, Weybridge, Addlestone, Byfleet and Burntcommon following the morning rush hour.
There are also approximately 20 minutes of delays clockwise from Cobhan Services.
Elsewhere on the M25…
The M25 clockwise between Junction 22 and Junction 23 has reopened after a HGV broke down.
“All lanes have now reopened following the recovery of a broken down HGV,” National Highways has said.
“Residual delays of 30 mins and 3 miles of congestion on the approach.”
What do we know about the crash itself?
The crash was described by police as a “serious collision”, although we know very little about the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The crash happened at around 11.55pm on August 31.
It was severe enough for Surrey Police to initially close the motorway in both directions.
Police spent around six hours at the scene, conducting a forensic investigation at the scene which lasted until around 6am.
But, details around the number of vehicles involved, or the nature of any injuries, have not been released by emergency services.

According to travel site Inrix, congestion is stretching back to Junction 13 (Staines).
Queues of traffic are being diverted via Byfleet to the A3 at Cobham.

What is the clearance time for the collision?
Police investigations have finished, but delays are expected to last throughout this morning.
Heavy congestion is building along the diversion routes, particularly through Byfleet and onto the A3 at Cobham, it has been reported.
“Surrey Police investigations were carried out overnight and completed at approximately 0600,” National Highways says.
“The incident scene is now being cleared but this is likely to take several hours and the closure will remain through the morning peak travel period.
“Therefore, please expect long delays on approach to to J11 and also on local routes in the area this morning.”

National Highways has advised drivers caught up in the M25 delays to follow the diversion route via Hollow Square.
• Leave the M25 at Junction 11
• Follow the A320 through Ottershaw and Woking
• Take the A245 towards Cobham
• Rejoin the M25 at Junction 10 via the A3

National Highways said police have completed their investigations, but motorists have been urged to avoid the motorway this morning due to the traffic backlog.
